Hi OK! Substackers…
Martha Stewart knows a thing or two about Halloween. But this year, the lifestyle queen’s costume was anything but a treat.
The 84-year-old businesswoman, worth an estimated $400 million, sparked outrage after dressing as a homeless person, complete with torn clothing, dirt smeared across her face, and a sign reading, “I am hungry. Help me!!”
And the caption? “My QVC candles are perfect for Halloween!!!”
Yikes.
The backlash came fast, with critics blasting the multimillionaire for making light of homelessness. Stewart quickly deleted the photo and insisted she was actually trying to raise awareness about one of America’s biggest crises.
“I am distressed that my Halloween costume yesterday, which was intended to bring more awareness to the very serious subject of homelessness, has offended people, which was never my intention,” she explained.
She also pointed to her years of charitable work supporting people experiencing homelessness.
But that explanation didn’t exactly put out the fire.
